Will you tell us a bit about The Demonists and what inspired you to write it?

There is more to our world than meets the eye—darker things, crueler things. Exorcist John Fogg and his wife, psychic medium Theodora Knight, know what lurks in the shadows. But even they’re not prepared for the worst Hell has to offer…

It was supposed to be a simple exorcism, a publicity stunt to firmly establish John and Theodora’s thriving paranormal investigation empire in the public eye. But something went wrong, leading to an on-air massacre that unleashed a malicious host of demons and left Theodora catatonic, possessed by countless spirits.

John sets out on a desperate quest to find a cure for his wife, but his obsession brings him face-to-face with an even more terrifying problem: Theodora’s possession is only one piece of a deadly plot that is threatening the entire world. Because an ancient evil is about to make Earth its battlefield—and without John and Theodora’s intervention, there is no chance for salvation.

I’ve always loved stories about good battling evil, it’s pretty much the core of everything that I write. My wife loves the television shows about paranormal investigation—ghost hunting—and I just got to thinking of a husband and wife team of investigators, darlings of the media, that happen to get in WAY over their heads. The Demonists was born from there.

What kind of research did you do for the book?

I did some research on the rites of exorcism, and some stuff about the science of paranormal investigation . . . nothing too heavy. Just enough so I didn’t sound like an idiot. HA!

Have you always wanted to be a writer? Will you tell us more about yourself and your background?

Let’s see, I’m 54 years old, an Aquarius, been married for 25 years to the same woman, have a French Bulldog named Kirby that is the Antichrist, have a Mexican Box Turtle named Obi-Wan that I first got when the VERY first Star Wars movie was released in 1977. Yes, the turtle is that old. Actually wanted to be a comic book artist, but I was never really all that good. The writing came next, and I really took to that. As far as my background . . . started off writing comic books, worked for just about every major publisher. I’ve written . . . Hellboy, Buffy, Angel, Batman, Vampirella, Bone, Wolverine, Punisher, Devil Dinosaur, The Hulk . . . started writing novels in the early 2000’s and never looked back. I still dabble in comics whenever I get the chance . . . still my first love.

What’s one of the first things that you can remember writing?

I can remember sitting at an old typewriter when I was maybe eight or nine years old, and banging away on my very own Godzilla story . . . no punctuation, or capital letters, just typing for pages and pages. It was one enormous fight scene I think. HA!

Why SFF? What do you enjoy most about writing, and reading, in the genre?

I think I’ve always been bored with the real world . . . not that the real world isn’t interesting, it most certainly is, it just would be so much more interesting with Dragons, cyborgs, Giant Monsters, Superheroes, Demons, and Angel Private Investigators existing in it.

You’ve undoubtedly inspired authors with your work, but what authors have influenced you the most?

Stephen King, Earnest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ray Bradbury, Truman Capote, Joe Lansdale, Dennis Lehane, Mickey Spillane, Raymond Chandler . . . I could probably go on and on!

Have you read any good books lately? Anything you’d recommend?

Christopher Golden’s DEAD RINGERS was quite amazing, As was Sarah Pinborough’s THE DEATH HOUSE, Joe R. Lansdale’s PARADISE SKY is one of the best things I’ve read in a very long time.

What’s next for you? Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Well, there’s more The Demonists adventures to come . . . and I have a horror/thriller coming out from Simon Pulse in the Spring called, SAVAGE, and a secret project with Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola, that I can’t quite talk about yet for Winter 2017 . . . and another project called WORLD OF PAYNE with superstar artist, Frank Cho, for late in 2016. And I think that just about does it for me, but then again you never know! HA!
