Please welcome Gail Z. Martin back to the blog! Her new book, Vendetta, is out today, and she kindly answered a few questions about it, and more!
Vendetta picks up not too long after the first Deadly Curiosities novel. Cassidy has learned more about controlling her touch magic so it doesn’t knock her flat on her butt as often. She’s also figured out how to use it defensively, so she’s upped her game, holding her own alongside Teag. Teag has also increased his abilities with his Weaver magic. They get to use their fighting skills a lot.
Vendetta focuses on the large number of enemies Sorren has made in his centuries of existence as part of the Alliance, a coalition of mortals and immortals who work together to get dangerous magical items off the market and out of the wrong hands. Sorren’s past is very important to the plot, since someone is out to get him and everyone he cares about, and there are so many suspects to choose from among the malicious immortals whose plans he has thwarted.
Is it usually easier for you to write the second book in a series, since you’ve got quite a lot of the “world” fleshed out?
Second books are usually easier because I’ve gotten ‘moved in’ to the world and have explored the characters more, but there’s always a lot of new territory to cover. The Deadly Curiosities world not only includes the two novels, but also 19 short stories and novellas (so far) that are set in three different time periods. So I’ve had a lot of time to round out the characters, bring in secondary characters and flesh them out, and see the characters work together.
What have you enjoyed most about writing this series?
Everything! I love visiting Charleston to research locations and get story ideas. I really enjoy the modern setting that enables me to write in a different style with cultural references and contemporary language—quite a change from epic fantasy and steampunk! I enjoy finding ways to turn everyday objects into apocalyptic portals to the underworld. It’s also been fun turning all those hours I spent as a kid following my dad around at flea markets and antique shows into something much more entertaining. And it’s been a blast weaving in so many different types of supernatural creatures and magical traditions in the books and short stories.
You have so many projects going, and are an author of many hats! How do you keep everything straight?
That’s rarely a problem! Actually, I enjoy switching among series and settings because it keeps everything fresh. I do a lot of outlines, and Larry helps me with continuity, brainstorming and editing, so it all works out in the end!
I haven’t had quite as much time for relaxation reading lately as I would like, but I do my best to track the recent books I read on Goodreads. I’ve got a long wish-list of books I want to get to when I have the chance!
What books are you looking forward to in the new year?
I’ve got some non-fiction reading that will tie into various upcoming projects, so that includes books on the history of Albania, Romania and Bulgaria as well as a couple of books of regional ghost stories and a few on urban explorers plus some World War I histories. Never a dull moment!
What’s next for you? Is there any other news you’d like to share?
There will be a new series announced in 2016, but the contract hasn’t been inked, so I can’t say more except that I’m very excited! Of course, there’s Vendetta’s launch Dec. 29, then Shadow and Flame, the fourth and final book in the Ascendant Kingdoms Saga comes out in late March, and then in June, The Shadowed Path comes out, which returns to the world of The Summoner with eleven linked short stories about Jonmarc Vahanian, a pivotal character in my Chronicles of the Necromancer series.
And there are anthologies! The Weird Wild West, Cinched: Imagination Unbound and The Side of Good/The Side of Evil are all anthologies that launched in November/December featuring steampunk stories by Larry and me set in our Iron & Blood world featuring the characters in our Storm & Fury Adventures short stories. I’m committed to at least four anthologies that will launch in 2016 and suspect more will be forthcoming.
Plus novellas and short stories! I’m currently writing three series of short stories/novellas plus a fourth series co-written with my husband, Larry N. Martin. The Jonmarc Vahanian Adventures series will finish up its third and final season with three new novellas in 2016. I’ve just finished three novellas in the Blaine McFadden King’s Convicts series, which is set in the ‘gap’ of time between when Blaine gets exiled in Ice Forged and when the book’s main action begins. There will be three more novellas about his colonist years, the King’s Exiles series, coming in 2016. Watch for new novellas and short stories in the Deadly Curiosities Adventures and the Storm and Fury (Iron & Blood steampunk) Adventures as well.
The thrilling follow up to the urban fantasy series set in Charleston, South Carolina.
Someone very powerful is trying to destroy Sorren and everyone he cares about. That puts Cassidy, Teag and Trifles and Folly in the cross-hairs, against an unknown enemy with strong magic and significant resources. Sorren has spent centuries shutting down the plans of powerful immortals, dark warlocks and supernatural creatures, and now he’s got to figure out which of those many enemies is out to get him before they pick off his friends one by one and come after him to finish an immortal vendetta.
