Debra Mullins’s new book, PRODIGAL SON, just came out and is the first book in a brand new series! Debra was kind enough to chat with me about the book, and we’ve also got a copy to give away to one lucky winner!
Please welcome Debra to the blog!
Debra, will you tell us a bit about your new book, PRODIGAL SON?
PRODIGAL SON is the story of Rafe Montana, a bounty hunter who is descended from the Seers of Atlantis. He uses his powers to find bail jumpers around Las Vegas. Cara McGaffigan is a computer programmer from New Jersey who comes to Vegas searching for her stepbrother, who has disappeared after being arrested for car theft. Rafe and Cara team up to find her stepbrother, not realizing that he didn’t just steal a car; he stole a powerful crystal that came from Atlantis. Other parties want it, too, and they’re willing to do anything to get it.
You’re a multi-award nominated author, but did you always want to be a writer? Will you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
Yes, I’ve always wanted to write, ever since I can remember. When I found myself a stay-at-home mom with toddlers, I pulled out the first book I’d ever finished, a pirate story I’d written in seventh grade. It was 100 pages hand-written in spiral notebooks. I updated the story and made it the correct length, and that book turned into my first published novel, ONCE A MISTRESS.
Will you tell us about your main characters, Rafe and Cara, and why you think readers will connect with, and root for, them?
Rafe left his family after an accident with his powers left his brother Darius in a wheelchair. He determined it was too dangerous for his family for him to be around, so he moved to Las Vegas and started using his powers to be a bounty hunter. He’s haunted by the choice he made and misses his family, but he truly believes it’s for the best. Cara McGaffigan is a computer programmer from New Jersey who comes to Vegas looking for her stepbrother, Danny. Danny is a good guy, but he’s always looking for get-rich-quick schemes, and Cara has had to ride to his rescue more than once. This time, she put her condo up as security for his bond, but he skipped bail. Still, she comes to find him because Danny is the only family she has left, and she doesn’t want to lose him. Their opposite views on family (Rafe constantly running, Cara constantly saving) prove to be one of the points of contention between them.
What do you love most about writing paranormal romance, and being a writer in general?
I love paranormal romance because anything can happen. I read a lot of paranormal romance and am very excited at finally being able to write one. I love being a writer because I am never bored. I can always get lost in my own head, plotting stories, whether I’m waiting for a plane or in the dentist’s chair or doing something else where I can’t break out my laptop.
What is your writing process like? Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I am a pantser who plots, in that I write a synopsis first so I know what’s going on. Once I have the story straight in my head, I dive into the chapters and rarely look at that synopsis again.
What, or who, have been some of the biggest influences on your writing?
Nora Roberts has been a huge influence for me. I’ve owned and read every book she’s ever written, and when I am on deadline, she is the only author I can read who does not disrupt my flow.
What are you reading now?
I just finished SWEET ENEMY by Heather Snow, a Regency historical. I picked up the other two books in the trilogy and will be reading them next. She’s wonderful!
When you’re not working on your next project, how do you like to spend your free time?
There’s not a lot of free time. I still hold down a full time day job, but when I’m not on deadline I like to read, research my family tree and spend time with my family.
What’s next for you, this year and beyond?
I just finished the second book in the Truth Seers trilogy, about Rafe’s brother Darius. I’ve also got some ideas for some historicals.

About PRODIGAL SON:
Bounty hunter Rafe Montana is a Seer, descended from the fabled Atlanteans. He uses his inherited power to “see” criminals across the globe and track them down, and he’s just started on a new case. Danny Cangialosi is accused of disappearing with a stolen car…but for the first time in his life, when Rafe goes looking, he is unable to “see” him. Instead, his search leads him to Danny’s stubborn, meddling, and very cute stepsister, Cara McGaffigan.
Cara is looking for Danny, too, but not to turn him in. He is her brother, after all, and she’s convinced he has a good heart. If she can just find him before the cops do, she’ll figure out a way to get him out of this. But Cara didn’t count on a scorching-hot bounty hunter getting in her way.
Despite instant chemistry, Rafe and Cara know they’re never going to see eye-to-eye when it comes to Danny. What they don’t know is that Danny didn’t just steal a car—he stole a precious stone, a stone right out of the legends of Atlantis. It holds powers they can only dream of…and its owner wants it back.
