James Marshall is the author of Let’s Not Let a Little Thing Like The End of The World Come Between Us, Ninja Versus Pirate Featuring Zombies, and his new book, Zombie Versus Fairy Featuring Albinos, just came out in May! James was kind enough to write about his worldbuilding in the How To End Human Suffering series, and, courtesy of ChiZine, we’ve also got a copy of the book up for grabs, so be sure to check out the details at the end of the post!
Please welcome James to the blog!
One of the things I wanted to do with the world-building in my How To End Human Suffering series is to indict everybody. In NINJA VERSUS PIRATE FEATURING ZOMBIES, I spotlight the education system and describe those students and teachers who willingly embrace standardization as zombies. The protagonist and narrator of NVPFZ, a sixteen year old pirate and spiritual leader named Guy Boy Man, drives the zombies from his high school and teaches sex ed to the other kids, in hopes they will reject the idea that sex is only for procreation.
In the world I create in the How To End Human Suffering series, living human beings are those who are too young to conform or those who refuse to. Zombies are responsible. They study hard, get good grades, get married, get a job, and have kids. They’ve overpopulated the planet, spreading their violent hunger, poverty, and disease, and Guy Boy Man hopes to turn their kids against them and remove their food supply.
In ZOMBIE VERSUS FAIRY FEATURING ALBINOS, we’re introduced to a new narrator and protagonist, a depressed zombie named Buck Burger. Through Buck, we learn that there was once a war between zombies and supernatural creatures (such as fairies, elves, and centaurs). Now there’s an uneasy alliance between them. Every day, zombies destroy everything they can and supernatural creatures rebuild the world every night. Supernatural creatures also hide the horrible truth that almost all grown-ups are zombies from children.
With the world-building in my How To End Human Suffering series, I wanted to incriminate not only those who tear down and destroy, but also the goodhearted people who try to build and conserve. It seems to me that they buy into a broken system and provide the zombies with their food.
Both the people who mindlessly go along with the environment-destroying status quo and those who seek to reduce pollution so that the human population can grow unabated are part of the problem. Nobody has a real plan for the future. I hoped to recreate that world, metaphorically, in my How To End Human Suffering series. It may seem bleak that there are zombies everywhere, controlling everything, but I made it so that the world is rebuilt every day. Therein lies hope. On any given day, we can turn things around.
About Zombie Versus Fairy Featuring Albinos:
In a perfect world where everyone destroys everything and eats human flesh, one zombie has had enough: BUCK BURGER! When he rebels at the natural disorder, his marriage starts deteriorating and a doctor prescribes him an anti-depressant. When Buck meets a beautiful, green-haired pharmacist fairy named FAIRY_26, he quickly becomes a pawn in a Cold War between zombies and supernatural creatures. As Fairy_26 flies him between her tree-branch apartment in Fairyland and an aircraft-carrier pirate ship in a zombie-infested dystopia, Buck Burger struggles to make sense of it all and remain faithful to his overbearing wife. Does sixteen-year-old spiritual leader and pirate GUY BOY MAN make an appearance? Of course! Are there mind-controlling albinos? Obviously! Is there hot zombie-on-fairy action? Maybe! WHY AREN’T YOU READING THIS YET?!
