Christa Faust is the author of over 10 novels, including one of my favorites, Money Shot, and her newest novelization, FRINGE: THE ZODIAC PARADOX, just came out. Christa was kind enough to answer a few of my questions, so please welcome her to the blog!
We also have a copy of the book for giveaway, so be sure to check out the details alll the way at the bottom of the post!
Christa, will you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? Have you always been interested in writing?
I’m primarily a crime fiction writer with a hardboiled pulp sensibility, but I got my start in horror back in the early 90s. I’ve published a dozen novels, both original and tied into a variety of television shows and movies, including the award winning novelization of Snakes on a Plane. I love my job. To tell the truth, I’m really not fit to do anything else.
You’ve written everything from crime, of which Money Shot (and Edgar Award nominee!!) is one of my favorite novels, to supernatural noir with Triads, numerous short stories, and, of course, more than a few movie/TV tie-ins. In fact, your newest book, Fringe: The Zodiac Paradox just came out! Will you tell us a little bit about it?
It starts in the late sixties, when young graduate students Walter Bishop and William Bell are testing a special blend of perception-altering chemicals at Reiden Lake. Their artificially enhanced minds accidentally open a rift between universes and allow a vicious serial killer to escape into our world. The killer is profoundly changed and unnaturally enhanced by their psychic encounter, but it isn’t until 1974 that Walter learns the true nature of the monster they have unleashed. It’s up to him, along with Bell and Nina Sharp, to find a way to stop him.
When you’re writing a tie-in, how do you immerse yourself in the world in which you must write? I imagine there’s plenty of pressure to find the right voice to stay true to the universe and its fans!
The Fringe universe is the most complex out of any property I’ve worked on and features multiple intersecting timelines. I had to cover my office walls with notes to keep all the details straight. Also, I was under very strict supervision from Bad Robot from beginning to end, so it wasn’t like fan-fic where I could just write whatever I wanted. I had to work very closely with the writers from the show and go through more than one round of approval to make sure that the stories I was telling fit in with the rest of the Fringe canon. I didn’t mind, though, because I always enjoy brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of other writers.
What, or who, are some of the biggest influences in your writing?
I love classic mid century pulp novels and read mostly crime fiction. Richard Prather’s two-fisted private eye series is a personal favorite and as far as modern stuff I’m a big fan of Ray Banks and Megan Abbott. I’m also a Film Noir fan. Night and the City starring Richard Widmark is my favorite movie of all time.
What’s next for you?
I’ve been hired to write an erotic thriller for Dutton called Bad Romance. It’s sort of like Gillian Flynn does Fifty Shade of Grey, but I’ll be giving it my own unique, edgy spin. It’s quite a change from the Fringe books, but that’s what keeps my life interesting.
About Fringe: The Zodiac Paradox:
Critically acclaimed Fringe explores new cases with endless impossibilities. Set in Boston, the FBI’s Fringe Division started when Special Agent Olivia Dunham enlisted institutionalized “fringe” scientist Walter Bishop and his globe-trotting, jack-of-all-trades son, Peter, to help in investigations that defy all human logic – and the laws of nature. The first in an all-new series of tie-in novels!
About Christa Faust:
Christa Faust is the author of several novels, including Choke Hold, Money Shot and Hoodtown. Money Shot was nominated for an Edgar award, Anthony award and Barry award, and won a Spinetingler award in the ‘Rising Star’ category. She worked in the Times Square peep booths, as a professional dominatrix, and in the adult film industry both behind and in front of the cameras for over a decade, starring in dozens of racy fetish-oriented videos. She also wrote and directed a four-part bondage adventure serial called Dita in Distress, featuring world famous Burlesque queen Dita Von Teese. Faust is a Film Noir fanatic and an avid reader of classic hardboiled pulp novels, and an MMA fight fan. She lives and writes in Los Angeles.
