Interview: Amanda Carlson, author of Full Blooded and Hot Blooded!

It’s no secret that I loved Amanda Carlson’s first novel, Full Blooded (Jessica McClain #1) and am so excited about the next book, Hot Blooded, which is out later this month. Luckily for us, I wrangled Amanda into visiting the blog once again to catch up on what things have been like since Full Blooded came out, the new book, and more!

Please welcome Amanda back to the blog!

hotbloodedI’m so excited about the 2nd book in the Jessica McClain series, Hot Blooded! Can you give us a teaser as to what’s in store for our heroine this time around?
In HOT BLOODED, Jess in on the journey of her life. She’s out to find her man, and along the way she gets a chance to discover the new powers she’s acquired from her first shift. What better way to figure it out than being forced to test it to save herself and her friends? It’s full of action and adventure and a more than a few unique beasties. I had a blast writing it.

I bet things have been pretty exciting since Full Blooded came out! How has publication changed your life?
Oh man, it’s been incredible. Going from a full time mom to a full time author has been a dream of mine for a long time, but actually doing both things is a huge balancing act. That’s what surprised me the most about this job—it’s not 9-5, it’s all day, every day. When I’m home, I’m working. But I can’t complain at all. I’ve been working toward this for fifteen years. I’m lucky my kids are older. Now we negotiate the household tasks. It seems to be working…most of the time!

What do you enjoy most about writing this series?
I love the world building and the way it surprises me. Creating a world out of words is incredible. I love having free reign to give my characters the ability to do almost anything. It’s so much fun.

Did anyone in particular inspire the character of Jessica McClain?
No, she’s really a mishmash of all things I love about heroines: strong, confident, smart, independent with a bit of sass.

If your series were to hit the big screen, who would you cast as the main characters?
I’m terrible at this game! I always think casting is wrong in movies, LOL. I’d have to say Jess would be a mixture of a young Jennifer Garner and Katherine Zeta-Jones and Rourke would have to be a mixture of a blond Tom Hardy and Chris Hemsworth. I love me some Thor. There are no actors out there who are exactly like the characters in my mind, and I kind of like it that way. Leave it up to the imagination.

Is there any advice that you would offer to struggling writers?
Finish! Make yourself accountable and finish you manuscript. Once you do, you can go back in and fix it. But if you don’t have a ms, there’s nothing to fix. This is the hardest part, but you really can finish.

What’s next for you?
I’m hoping there will be more adventures with Jess and the gang! But my lips are sealed for now.

Thanks so much for hosting me today! I had a blast. HOT BLOODED is releasing on April 23rd and I’m so excited.

amandacarlsonAbout HOT BLOODED:
It hasn’t been the best week for Jessica McClain.
Her newly found mate has been kidnapped by a Goddess hell-bent on revenge, and Jessica is positive she can save him.

But being the only female werewolf in town comes with its own set of rules and powers… if only she understood them.

Aided by two vamps, two loyal Pack members, and one very reluctant human, Jessica must rescue her man while coming to terms with what being a wolf really means.

The second novel in the Jessica McClain series is a full on action adventure featuring one angry Goddess and plenty of monsters, demons, and a few newly risen beasties…
