Interview (& Giveaway): Julianna Scott, author of The Holders

Julianna Scott’s first novel, The Holders, just came out this week from Strange Chemistry, and she was kind enough to answer a few of my questions! Please welcome Julianna to the blog!

*Also, I have one copy of The Holders up for grabs, courtesy of Strange Chemistry, so be sure to check out the details at the bottom of the post!

juliannahead-tempJulianna, your first novel, The Holders, is out this week! How did you celebrate when you found out the book would be published?
We went to dinner, though honestly it was sort of weird. I knew we were celebrating, but it was hard to remember what about because for some reason it didn’t feel real. I think it probably took a few weeks to truly settle in and feel real.

Will you tell us a bit about The Holders and its heroine, 17 year old Becca?
She is smart, protective, and fierce. Her bull-headedness can hold her back sometimes, and she definitely has a temper, but she means well and would do anything for the people she loves.

Will you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and that is where my family still is. I was a music major in school, then afterwards I went down to Florida to work in the Disney World College program. That is where I met my husband, and after getting married and living in Florida for about a year, we moved up to the Chicago area where my husband grew up and have been there ever since. I didn’t start writing until 2009, but I have been doing my best to make up for lost time.

When you started writing The Holders, did you already know how many books you’d like to write in the series, or did you just decide to let it see where it takes you?
No, this is the sort of series I had to plan out in advance. The history and story get way to complex in the upcoming books for me to have remembered everything I needed to do to make it all make sense.

theholdersWhat do you love most about writing fantasy?
The idea that there really are no rules. You can build any world you want as close to or far from the real world as you want and it’s all okay. The possibilities are endless.

If you could experience one book again for the very first time, which one would it be?
This one is hard as I actually enjoy books more the subsequent times I read them. I always by my books in hardback when I can as I reread my favorites over and over again. The paper packs just don’t hold up, and I’m still not all that fond of the e-reader.

What book(s) are you reading now?
Haha… I wish. I have no time to read the past several weeks, but my to read pile is waiting for me when I get back. At the top of the list are YAs Indigo Spell, Heaven, and Splintered.

When you manage to find some free time, how do you like to spend it?
Watching TV with my husband. Our favorite pastime. 🙂

What’s next for you?
The second Holders book, The Seers needs to be finished, then there are two more YA projects, one more than half finished, waiting in the wings.

About THE HOLDERS:
17-year-old Becca has spent her whole life protecting her brother – from their father leaving and from the people who say the voices in his head are unnatural. When two strangers appear with apparent answers to Ryland’s “problem” and details about a school in Ireland where Ryland will not only fit in, but prosper, Becca is up in arms.

She reluctantly agrees to join Ryland on his journey and what they find at St. Brigid’s is a world beyond their imagination. Little by little they piece find out information about their family’s heritage and the legend of the Holder race that decrees Ryland is the one they’ve been waiting for–but, they are all, especially Becca, in for a surprise that will change what they thought they knew about themselves and their kind.
