Interview (& Giveaway): Cat Adams, author of The Isis Collar

Today I’ve got the lovely Cie Adams, one half of the writing duo (along with Cathy Clamp), Cat Adams, on the blog! Their brand new installment of the Blood Singer Series, The Isis Collar, just came out, and Cie was kind enough to answer a few questions. Also, I’ve got 2 copies of The Isis Collar up for grabs, so be sure to check out the giveaway details at the bottom of the post!

Please welcome Cie to the blog!

Cie, you’re the author of more than 15 novels with Cathy Clamp, and the 4th book in your Blood Singer series, The Isis Collar, is out this month! Think back to when you sold your first book… How did you celebrate? Was there squeeing? Cake? Both?
LOTS of squeeing. As I recall there was also dinner at Red Lobster, and chocolate.

Would you tell us a bit about The Isis Collar?
Celia throws down with a wicked witch who has unleashed a magical zombie plague. It’s very tense, because the villain has targeted schoolchildren.

What has been your favorite character to write in the Blood Singer Series?
Oh, I have a hard time choosing. There are so many fun ones. Celia, of course, is a favorite. But I love Bruno. Cathy prefers John Creede. Bubba is fun. One of my favorite scenes is when he confronts Celia on the siren island because he thinks she’s been lying to him.

What do you love most about writing Urban Fantasy/Paranormal?
I love that it is so limitless, but at the same time grounded in reality.

Do you listen to music when you write, and if so, is there a playlist?
I don’t listen to music much while I am actually writing. But there are many songs that inspire me for the writing sessions. For example, “Because of You” really inspires me in the scenes where Celia is dealing with her mother. There was an Evanesence song that truly captured Celia’s relationship with her best friend Vicki, and her sense of loss at her death. And Avril Lavigne’s “I’m With You” actually inspired an entire series that I haven’t had time to write yet, but am really looking forward to.

If the Blood Singer series was ever made into a movie, who do you picture as your main characters (Celia, Bruno…)?
Alas, in my head they are actual people, so I don’t really see someone else playing them. It’s like asking who you’d have portray your sister or mom. Just too weird. I know that sounds freaky. But for me it’s true.

With Book 5, The Eldritch Conspiracy, due soon, are there any firm plans for how many books you’d like in the series, or will you just see where it takes you?
We have ideas, but it’s always up to the public and the publisher. Is there enough interest and fan base for the series to continue? If so, we’ll keep going, because it’s a really rich world, and we love the characters.

When you’re not busy writing, how do you like to spend your free time?
Free time? Vat is zis sing of vich you speak?

If you could have drinks with anyone (living or dead, literary or otherwise), who would it be?
There is one particular ex-boyfriend with whom it ended very badly because I was young and an idiot. I’d love to have several drinks with him and find out how his life has turned out and apologize for having hurt us both way back when. Corny, I know, but true.

If you could read one book again for the first time, what would it be?
Laurell K. Hamilton’s GUILTY PLEASURES. It was the first urban fantasy book I ever read and it opened my eyes to the possibilities.

What are you reading now?
Right now I am in the editing cave, and doing release promotion, and working at the day job full-time. I have a TO READ stack up to the ceiling, but I have absolutely promised myself that I WILL NOT crack open any of those books until I turn in the edits. I’m thinking that will be next Monday and I’m REALLY looking forward to it.

Is there any further news of upcoming projects or events that you’d like to share with us?
Well, the next two weekends Cathy and I will be having signings in Texas, you can check out our website for specifics. I will be attending RT in Chicago as well, and am really hoping to see a bunch of people there.

About The Isis Collar:
Celia Graves was once an ordinary human, but those days are long gone. Now she strives to maintain her sanity and her soul while juggling both vampire abilities and the powers of a Siren.

Warned of a magical “bomb” at a local elementary school, Celia forces an evacuation. Oddly, the explosion seems to have no effect, puzzling both Celia and the FBI. Two weeks later, a strangely persistent bruise on Celia’s leg turns out to be the first sign of a magical zombie plague.

Finding the source of the plague isn’t Celia’s only concern. Her alcoholic mother has broken out of prison on the Sirens’ island; her little sister’s ghost has possessed a young girl; and one of Celia’s boyfriends, a powerful mage, has disappeared.

  1. Thanks again for having me here to visit! It is much appreciated.

  2. Love the Sazi Tales is there one in the works?

    • We’ve been talking about it a lot. I believe it’s on tap, but we have a few contracted stories we’re doing first. But your patience will be rewarded. 🙂

  3. I too am a Sazi fan and am happy to hear you say that. I have purchased The Isis Collar and now I’m just waiting for the time to start it!

  4. Great interview! I’ll have to keep in mind some of the inspiring songs you mentioned when I read more Celia. I don’t think I could see actual people playing these characters in a movie either. I too like the early works of L.K.H.

  5. Truth be told there are no actors that can match a character in a book to my satisfaction. The character in a book that I enjoy in my imagination is impossible to live up to in reality anyway.
Hope you are enjoying the tour as much as we are enjoying you ladies posts at each stop, always one more interesting tidbit of info found in each of them!

  6. Love your books. Don’t have this one yet.

  7. Your books have given me many hours of enjoyable; thank you so much. Am looking forward to reading ‘The Isis Collar’.

How do you choose the names for your characters and their personalities?

  8. Sorry, I meant to say…
Your books have given me many hours of enjoyment…not enjoyable.

  9. Well, sometimes it’s just inspiration. On other occasions I hear a name and go WHOA I like that one (Angelina Bonetti, Bruno’s high school sweetheart was one of those). But when all else fails, when we’re looking for a specific name – such as a Hawaiian or Polynesian name for the Pacific sirens, there is always the international baby name book.

  10. Love your books, especially this series. Celia is a fighter, for herself as well as others, which makes her a rare jewel indeed.

  11. Thank you all for the compliments! I love Celia because she TRIES so hard. She doesn’t always get it right, but she wants to. Of course I’m supposed to love her, she’s one of my characters. But still . . .

  12. Hey Lady cant wait ro read The Isis Collar. You never fail to intrigue and entertain. Keep them coming!

  13. Great interview! This is a new-to-me author so I haven’t read this series yet. The cover is amazing and sound like a delicious read! I would love a chance to read it. Thank you for this generous giveaway chance!

  14. This on goes on the must-read list.

  15. Your series is new to me but now that I am aware of them I want to read them and get to know Celia. Congrats on your latest release.

  16. I love all of the books written by these two women. I can’t hardly wait for the next one (no matter what series). I also appreciate all the hard work they and all associated with getting these books to the public do. Thank You All

  17. Thanks to all of you for stopping by, and for reading.

  18. I love this series! All of the characters work great together. Bubba is one of my favorites also. I can’t wait to read this one and find out what else is in store for her!

  19. I love this series. But to date I love all of Cie and Cathy’s books.

Great job on the interview, Cie. Almost as good as sitting over a drink (or coffee) and having a chat.

  20. Meow! I’d love a copy of this book. I’m a voracious reader, book addict, and hoarder, which means the more I get, the better I feel. I’m also a book blogger so any books I can receive to review is a wonderful gift. Here’s hoping I can get my “claws” on this one. 😀

  23. I cant wait to read this. Thanks for the giveaway

  24. Thanks so much for a great interview. I’m looking forward to reading Isis Collar, sounds like a great book.

  25. Hi Cie,

Enjoy your time in Texas, should be nice and warm there already.
Now bring on the zombie plague!

  26. A vampire and a siren mix, I like the sound of that.
And congrats to you for making yourself finish editing before touching your TBR pile! I try make myself get things done around the house before I pick up another book, but the call of the book is so strong sometimes….and I am weak =)

  27. I think it’s pretty sweet of the author to think about her ex :]

  28. I haven’t read this series yet – this is the first time I’ve really heard about it. But I love a good urban fantasy so this looks good! I’ll definitely check the series out 🙂

  29. Victoria Zumbrum

Thanks for the giveaway. Please enter me in contest. I would love to read this book.

  30. What a fun interview! I love the whole idea. Witches? Zombies? Where do I sign up. Oh and I hope you do find that elusive free time to do something totally nonsensical and just fun. 🙂

    • Soon. Very soon. But I have to admit that I love the writing enough that it’s not as much of a hardship as it could be. LOL. Now housework, THAT is a harship. LOL

  31. Great interview! I’ve read the Tales of Sazi but not the Blood Singer yet. Soon though i hope!! Thanks for the giveaway!!

  32. I can’t wait to read your new book, heading to barnes and noble on payday!

  33. Sounds like a great book: I love strong females! I’m surprised that I haven’t heard about your books before…guess I’ve been hiding under a rock…LOL!!

  34. Congrats on your new release. The cover is very attractive.
How did you and Cathy decide to be writing partners?
I enjoyed reading the excerpt, thanks for sharing.

  35. Hi, Cie.
I haven’t read any of your books, yet! I have to admit that the title, The Isis Collar drew me in as did the cover.
I hope I win because I will have to start at the beginning of the series because, even if an author tells me it’s a stand alone book, I MUST read from book 1!
    Thanks for the giveaway,

  36. I have really enjoyed the Blood Singer series and this latest cannot wait to read. This series has some amazing worldbuilding and great characters. One series not to be missed!

  37. I’m always excited about a new Cat Adams book and the cover is amazing!

  38. Great Interview! I too am a Sazi fan and am happy to hear that there will be another eventually. The Isis Collar sounds very interesting and I love the cover.

    • Thank you! And yes, we frequently have “spirited discussions” regarding the stories. One of the most important things needed for a writing partnership is respect for your co-author so that you are willing to discuss things (somewhat) rationally knowing that you both have strengths that contribute to the book and that you are both motivated to make it the best it can be.

  40. WOW, lots of folks popped in later yesterday! OKAY, let’s see, I’ll go through and try to answer individual questions.

  41. Sorry if I missed anyone. Thank you all for the lovely compliments. I really hope you will enjoy the book.

Now I am off to the day job where I must behave appropriately (DARN IT).

  42. This book sounds great. Thanks for the giveaway.

  43. This book sounds so good and I can’t wait to read it! I can’t believe Cat has a full time job in addition to writing what sounds like an amazing book! My hat is definitely off 🙂

  44. Congrats on the new release! I love this series.

  45. sounds really cool, A must read for my booklist!

  46. Evil witch, zombie plague…count me in!

  47. I love zombies and this series sounds really great. I would love to read this. Are the books in this series stand alone or do they need to be read in order?

  48. Congratulations on the new book! It sounds very good.

  49. Congrats on the release. Sounds like a very interesting series. Adding to my list.
