Interview and Giveaway: Devyn Quinn, author of Darkness Descending

Joining us today is the awesome Devyn Quinn, author of the brand new urban fantasy, Darkness Descending. Devyn has also offered a $10 giftcard to Amazon or Barnes and Noble to one lucky winner, so be sure to check out the contest details at the end of the post! Also, you can click on the button to your left and check out the entire Event schedule.

Please welcome Devyn to the blog!

Devyn, you’re a veteran writer, with more than 15 books in print! Did you always hope to be a writer?
I had dreams of being a writer since I first learned to read!

You’ve written about mermaids, shifters that turn into cougars, and also lots of spicy romance! In Darkness Descending, you delve into the world of vampires. What was your favorite part of writing Darkness Descending? Was there any particular inspiration for your heroine, Jesse Burke?
My favorite part of writing the book was putting ‘the end” on the manuscript, LOL. Originally I envisioned Jesse as a teenager, about 15 with more of an Urban Fantasy slant. Given the subject matter, though, my editor felt she should be a young woman in her early twenties.

Is there a set number of books planned for the Vampire Armageddon series, or will you just see where it takes you?
At this point it is at the wait and see stage!

What are some of your biggest literary influences?
Stephen King and John Grisham are two writers whose styles I really admire. King, for his ability to weave together impossible worlds and make them work. And Grisham for his sparse, but effective prose.

Is there any particular thing that helps you write? Anything that helps get you into a creative state of mind?
I need silence and an empty house.

What’s on your nightstand right now?
I don’t have a nightstand! My bedroom space is very limited and a bed table won’t fit!

I read that you love action flicks. Quick, name one of your absolute all time faves!
Shoot ‘Em Up with Clive Owen is one of my favorites!

Besides Marilyn Monroe, what pre-60’s Hollywood celeb would you like to meet?
Definitely Greta Garbo! And Charlie Chaplin.

Can you tell us something about yourself that not many people know about?
I don’t own a television, or any other furniture for that matter. My personal possessions have been pared down to minimal. A bed, a desk and a chair, along with a computer.

Is there any news of upcoming projects or events that you’d like to share with us?
It’s all in the hush stages now, but when I have an announcement, I will be glad to tell everyone all the deets!

  21. The cover for Siren’s Call is beautiful! Stephen King rocks, but I think I’d rather watch his stories than read them because the movies themselves already scare the bejeepers out of me. I have an over active imagination and that won’t turn out too well if I read his works =) but I do love mer stories!
    Thanks for hosting this giveaway!!

  22. Brand new Urban Fantasy? Who boy am I in. Thank you for sharing today and for the wonderful giveaway opportunity. I look forward to reading Darkness Descending. When I first starting reading the post I was trying to think up a question to ask Ms. Quinn and decided to ask her what kind of veterinarian she was LOL after I went back over the post I realized it said veteran not veterinarian and just had to share my chuckles. It’s the glasses you see, when I get tired things get fuzzy LOL. I will be looking up your wonderful novels and look forward to reading more about them. So then, if you were a veterinarian, what would you specialty be? Heading on over to stalk you now 🙂

  26. Leigh Ann Gregoire

Great giveaway for a great genre!

  27. I wish my family would throw our TV out sometimes. Nothing beats a good book. Thanks for the giveaway.

  28. Great interview – it’s always interesting to see what a writer prioritizes in his/her life. I don’t think I could go with the minimalist life – it’s very Zen – but then I haven’t tried. Thanks for all the info!

  29. I really enjoyed reading your interview, Devyn. Will need to check out the movie,
    Shoot’Em Up with Clive Owen.

  34. I like both authors who have influenced you. I am curious, what is your reason for not owning a television or any other furniture? I will be adding your books to my tbr list. Thanks for the interview and giveaway.

  35. I grabbed a copy of Darkness Descending at the Borders sale the last time I went. Thanks for the giveaway!

  36. I’ve been wanting to read Darkness Descending. Thanks for the post on Devyn and the giveaway. The Sirens call is new to me also, so thanks for sharing =) No night stand 🙁 ouch. I have to have mine…that’s where my reading light and books go 😉

  37. Thanks for all your comments folks. Tina, the reason I don’t own much is that I am broke, LOL. I had a bankruptcy to go with my divorce several years ago and so I let everything go. When I say that, I mean it. I learned to live without a lot of material possessions. Also, writing doesn’t pay much(would you ever think that?) and you have to pare down your lifestyle a lot to live on a beginner’s pay. I’ve cut down to the bone and still struggle making the bills.

  38. Good for you to stick with your dream and now you have 15 books under your belt! Even if it means sacrificing creature comforts in the between time. Saying between time because your books have a lot of promise and I think will take you places…maybe even somewhere better than subway =)
This new series sounds very interesting, I like the plot line. Great cover art (on all your books really)
If I am lucky enough to win the gift card I will definately be buying one of your books! Thanks for the chance to win, I hope your book does very well for you.

Have to say that I was lucky enough to read an ARC of Darkness Descending and totally loved the set up. This was a great post apocalyptic type story – and the grittiness was awesome lol. I can’t wait to see how things progress in future installments.
