Bookish News: September 23rd, 2011

Happy Friday gang! I’ve got some fun news and giveaways to start your Friday, and don’t forget to check out the sidebar for my open giveaways!

I’m a huge fan of Alexander Gordon Smith, and just love his Furnace series, so I was excited to see that Tor.com has an exclusive short story by AGS called The Night Children. Go forth and read it-it’s the awesome!

Suvudu.com has a couple of fun polls up, and a couple of my faves are Dracula vs. Frankenstein (which has influenced us the most), and favorite early Stephen King novels (I’m a ginormous King fan). If these tickle your fancy, head on over and vote!

Did you know that the newest installment in Diana Gabaldon’s Lord John Grey series, The Scottish Prisoner, will be out in November? I’m totally psyched, and not sure if I can wait that long. I suppose I’ll have to settle for pre-ordering

I was lucky enough to interview Stefan Petrucha recently, and am very excited for his upcoming release, Dead Mann Walking (Oct. 4th). While you wait, you may read an excerpt HERE.

I was recently very lucky to snag a copy of the upcoming novel, Vacation (Sept. 27th), by Matthew Costello. I’ll be posting the review in the next week, but in the meantime you can read a completely original story called “Day One” that takes place in the Vacation universe. I promise it’ll get you psyched up for the release!

About Vacation:
Jack Murphy and his family need a vacation. This one might just kill them. After a global crisis causes crops to fail and species to disappear, something even more deadly happens. Masses around the world suddenly became predators, feeding off their own kind. These ‘Can Heads’ grow to such a threat that fences, gated compounds, and SWAT-style police protection become absolutely necessary to live. And after one attack leaves NYPD cop Jack Murphy wounded and his partner dead, Jack takes his wife and kids on a vacation. Far up north, to the Paterville Family Camp, a fortress-like compound in the mountains, where families can still swim and take boats out on a lake.At first, it’s idyllic. There’s plenty of food, fun stuff for their children, and another nice young couple with kids of their own. And when the camp suffers a Can Head attack, Jack even helps defend it. He’s immediately offers Jack a job in security. Jack’s family wants to stay. But Jack slowly comes to realize that there’s something else going on at Paterville Family Camp… and when he makes a gruesome discovery, he will be forced to get his family out, no matter who… or what… stands in his way.

I’m a ridiculously huge fan of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s Pendergast series, and the guys want YOU to help them pick their next title. It’s not a contest, per se, but a chance for friends and readers to participate in the fun of naming a novel. However, if your title is chosen, you’ll be named in the acknowledgements and receive a signed, special edition of Gideon’s Sword. How cool is that?? The title doesn’t necessarily have to match the plot, but they’re looking for something “striking and evocative”. So, if you’re caught up with the series (Cold Vengeance is the latest installment), and want to give this title thing a try, shoot them an email at HelenEsterhazy@yahoo.com with the name of your title, and NOTHING ELSE, in the subject line of the email! Good luck and have fun!

For my Regency Romance and Paranormal readers, Avon has a cornucopia of ebooks on sale for a limited time:

*Also, Victoria Alexander’s classic A Visit From Sir Nicholas is only .99, along with Intervamption by Kristin Miller and Second Chance at the Sugar Shack by Candis Terry.

I’m totally psyched about the upcoming US version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Daniel Craig, ya’ll), and wanted to share the trailer with you. Did I mention Daniel Craig is in it?
