Blog Tour and Guest Post: Melanie Card, author of Ward Against Death

Today I’d like to turn the blog over to Melanie Card, author of the upcoming Young Adult fantasy from Entangled Publishing called Ward Against Death. Melanie is going to introduce us to the heroine of Ward Against Death, and there’s also a giveaway of one ecopy of the book to one lucky winner, so be sure to check the contest details at the end of the post!

Over to Melanie!

Thanks for having me Kristin. I’m excited to be here. Today I want to introduce the heroine from my novel WARD AGAINST DEATH: Celia Carlyle.

Sometimes my characters step up and demand attention (that’s what happened with my hero, Ward) and sometimes they don’t. My heroine, Celia Carlyle, crept up and held my hero at dagger point before realizing she had no choice but to participate in the story. (It helped to kill her before starting the book.)

Celia is a strong, independent young woman. In her mind she doesn’t need anyone and life is fine. She’s well on her way to becoming the best assassin in her home town, Brawenal City, just like her mother, and her father is a powerful man, controlling most of the criminal activity in the area. She is skilled in a variety of fighting styles, weapons and poisons, as well as things like acrobatics and acting, everything required for her deadly trade. Her father is also a Councilor to the Prince of Brawenal, so her family possesses public as well as private wealth. Life is good and Celia wouldn’t want it any other way.

But all this changes when she wakes up and a necromancer is staring down at her. Someone has murdered her. She had thought she knew how the world worked. The foolish came to a foul end and the strong survived. But she wasn’t foolish (a little cutthroat—kind of a requirement in her occupation—but not foolish.)

She doesn’t want to accept that everything she believed was wrong and that her trust in her family was misplaced. And she doesn’t want to work with this necromancer to find her revenge. She isn’t even sure she can trust him. Except she has no choice, she needs him to use his magic to keep her alive.

And while he’s completely frustrating (he’s awkward, doesn’t know how to defend himself in a fight, and knows nothing about her world), there’s something charming and honest about him. She starts to wonder if everything she knows about herself and the world is wrong.

Thanks for joining me today. The hero from WARD AGAINST DEATH changes how Celia sees her world. Have you met someone who’s changed how you see the world, or met someone who’s inspired you to become a better person?

  17. I like to think that everyone we meet in life touches our world one way or another and I hope cause me to strive to be a better individual. I really believe all the people who have looked at me like I’s nuts and have given dirty looks when I have said hello in the checkout line at the grocery story have made a significant impression on life – this has caused me to try to always smile and have a pleasant greeting to those around me, hoping to cheer someone up each time I am there – the world is too serious and if I am feeling to snarky to present this demeanor, I will stay home 🙂 and wallow, not taking it out on others. Thank you for the wonderful post and giveaway opportunity. I have recently been following this book and wold love the opportunity to read it.

  18. Someone who changed the way I look at the world and myself is my good friend, Debbie. She is such a good mom and so giving and selfless, she makes me want to be a better person just by being around her!

Thanks for an awesome guest post and giveaway:)
