MFT Q&A and Giveaway with Kevin Hearne

It was so much fun having Kevin on the blog a few weeks ago, I asked him back again! He said yes, cause he’s all kinds of awesome:) Today is the release day of Hexed, the 2nd book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, and we’ve got 3 copies of Hounded (Iron Druid #1) up for grabs, so be sure to see the giveaway details at the end of the post, and please welcome Kevin back to the blog!

Kevin, in Atticus, you’ve given us a witty new hero to root for. Was it challenging writing a character that’s over two thousand years old?

Oh, yes, and the challenge continues. This is a guy with one hell of a backstory, and I’ve had to make extensive lists of where he’s been and when and what languages he knows (42 of them, in homage to Douglas Adams) and what historical events he would have witnessed. But the attraction of it is figuring out what keeps him involved with regular humans when we die out in a measly 60-80 years. Most long-lived characters you find—vampires and such—are monsters for us, almost as if their very immortality makes them monstrous. To humanize someone like Atticus is one of the joys of writing the series for me.

Hounded is steeped in mythology and magic. What kind of research did you do for the series?

Much to my embarrassment, I read a few books on Druid magic before I realized the authors were just making shit up. The original Druids wrote nothing down of their rituals, not a single prayer or ballad. It was an entirely oral culture, wiped out by the Romans and St. Patrick. Everything we know of the Druids actually comes from ancient Greek, Roman, and Christian sources—all of whom didn’t really like the Druids that much. So you have to keep that bias in mind as you read their accounts, combine that with modern archaeological knowledge, and then go from there. My mythology came from The Annals of the Four Masters and the Fenian and Ulster Cycles.

Atticus’ dog, Oberon, was definitely a scene stealer. How fun was he to write?

Oh, he was (and continues to be) an absolute joy. He gets to say stuff humans would never say. And it’s all wish-fulfillment for me, because I’ve always wanted to be able to talk to my dogs.

Who is your favorite character to write, and why?

Can I have two favorites? I like Oberon for low humor and Leif for language jokes. Leif’s stilted diction and Atticus’s efforts to modernize his vernacular honestly amuse me no end. You’ll see quite a bit of that in Hexed, and when Leif finally tries to take Atticus’s advice, well, I was giggling for days after I wrote it. Not sure if everyone else is going to love the language games, but my editors seemed to like it, so I’ll cross my fingers.

Other than a casual encounter, Atticus doesn’t have a serious love interest. Are you gonna give that poor, sweet boy a girlfriend? 😉

Well, um…I don’t want to spoil anything, but Atticus’s personal relationships get extremely dangerous in Hexed, and in Hammered (book 3, out July 5!) you’ll learn more about his romantic past. As for his romantic future…let’s just say I have plans. Muah-ha-ha-ha!

What characters can we expect to see more of in Book 2 of the Iron Druid Chronicles, Hexed (out today!!!)?

Lots more Leif Helgarson and the Sisters of the Three Auroras. Laksha Kulasekaran comes back for a couple of chapters. Oberon gets another bath and a new obsession to go with it—no more Genghis Khan. And of course the widow MacDonagh is sitting on her porch with a glass of Tullamore Dew, waiting for you or anyone else to come by for a bit of a chat. You’ll also meet some characters who will give Atticus quite a bit o’ trouble in the future.

Is there any news of upcoming appearances, events or projects that you’d like to share?

I’ll be chuggin’ through Colorado right around NOW for some ninja signings, so follow me on Twitter (@KevinHearne) if you’re in CO for updates on where and when I’ve signed some books. I’ll be hitting Pueblo, the Springs, Denver, and Ft. Collins, and some small indie places in Montrose and Durango. I’ll probably be in upstate NY for the release of Hammered, so if you’re anywhere between Syracuse and Albany keep your eyes peeled. Best place to go for lists of “official” appearances would be my Events and Appearances page on my website. Looking forward to seeing people at San Diego Comic Con in July!
Thanks very much for talkin’ to me again, Kristin!

I've just finished Hexed (which happened to be in stock at my local bookstore a few days before the release date– a mysterious godsend for me, since I've been dying to get my hands on it). I also enjoyed Leif's attempts at speaking modern slang and Oberon's new fixation– so much that I kept laughing my head off on a lawn chair in the middle of my mom's pool party.
