Today on the blog I’ve got the powerhouse writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Berone, better known as Sable Grace. Their sizzling novel, Ascension, just hit the shelves and I’m happy to say that we’ve got one copy up for grabs to one lucky winner!

Your bio says that you were critique partners that discovered an affinity for combining your individual talents. It’s pretty awesome how that came about and must have been an exciting discovery! How long have you been friends?
A writer defines themselves by their voice. To learn that you can take two distinct voices and merge them well enough that a new person with a voice completely her own is born was beyond belief. We’ve been friends ten years now. No wait, make that about seven years. When we first met, we didn’t really like each other much. Thankfully, we moved beyond those differences and a lasting friendship developed.
Ascension is the first novel in your brand new urban fantasy series. I find it fascinating when authors collaborate, and always wonder if it’s a process that takes longer then if an author writes alone. How long did Ascension take to complete?
Since we’re both fast writers—okay, so Heather’s faster, but Laura’s able to hold her own most days—the first draft of Ascension was completed in eighty-two days. Yes, we can give you the exact date because Heather has a secret love for spreadsheets and Laura has this incredible desire to watch the little pie chart fill up. It’s odd, we know, but it works well for us. The process can take longer than working solo if one of us is having a bad day, week, month. There’s delays in writing because you can’t move forward until you’ve spoken to your partner. But it can also be faster due to the same circumstances. If one of us is having a bad day, week or month, then the other can pick up the slack. So it kinda evens out.
Did you know when you started Ascension that it would be part of a series, or did that come about later?
We knew from the beginning that Ascension was part of a series. How many parts? Well, we have a number in our heads, but the actual count depends on our editor and the readers, but we sure hope to see the Dark Breed Novels continue for a long time.
The cover art for Ascension is pretty awesome! Did you both have a say in what the cover would look like?
The cover is hot, isn’t it! We fell in love with it when we saw an emailed black and white version. The original apparently had pretty bad 80’s hair, but our editor nipped that in the bud, thank goodness, and now Kyana looks pretty kick ass!
Kyana is half Vampire, half Lychen, so of course that brings to mind Kate Beckinsale in Underworld. What actress would you choose to play Kyana if Ascension were made into a movie?
Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra from the movie Serenity (and the TV show Firefly) is our image of Kyana. The looks and the way she carried herself on the shows fits Kyana perfectly. If we’re ever blessed to see Ascension hit the big screen, it would totally rock if Baccarin was offered the role.
When the two of you aren’t writing about kick-ass heroines, what do you like to do for fun?
Top of the list would be spending time with our families. For the most part, they’re pretty understanding when it comes to our writing time—well, Heather’s is anyway. Laura’s are still a little too young to understand what “I’m working” means—and deserve the attention when we’re not writing. After them would be reading, watching all the Tivo’ed shows we’ve missed, and working on our individual projects. We’re also avid gamers making us both pretty old geeks.
Can you give us the scoop on upcoming projects? Maybe a teaser from the next Dark Breed novel?
Well, Dark Breed Novel Book 2, will be released in January 2012. We just turned in Book 3 and will be starting Book 4 in the series soon. Readers will get to see a lot more of the ancient gods and will get to stray (not too far) from St. Augustine to see other parts of Florida… or whatever’s left of them after the destruction… as well as more of the other worlds we’ve created. As for a teaser, hmm, we don’t want to give away the ending of Ascension, so how about, “If Kyana thought finding the key to Hell was going to be her toughest challenge ever, her next assignment for the Order of Ancients will make her question not only who she is, but who her loyalties belong to.”
