I’m Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that’s ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best–assassination. And I help. You could say I’m an Assistant Assassin. But then I’d have to kick your ass.
Vayl and I have to take out a Miami plastic surgeon with ties to terrorism. But the assignment gets complicated when it turns out he’s in cahoots with a supernatural nasty powerful enough to bring America to her knees.
I’ve met a new heroine to root for, and her name is Jasmine (Jaz) Parks! After a tragic incident throws CIA super-assassin Jaz off her game, her boss Pete pairs her with 300 year old sex-on-wheels vampire named Vayl. Jaz finds the partnership to be more than agreeable, and is just getting used to being Vayl’s bodyguard when a they discover a plot to unleash an unstoppable plague upon the unsuspecting public. They’ll have to stop this nasty group of evildoers, and Jaz will have to deal with her past, her future with Vayl , not to mention some freaky new powers of her own in the process.
Once Bitten, Twice Shy was just a fun read from start to finish. Jaz reminds me a bit of Stephanie Plum, if Stephanie was a kick ass assassin (and not an inept bounty hunter). I loved her funny asides, and the author managed to humanize her while making her very capable at her job. Jaz is damaged, and struggles every day to keep it together, not only for herself, but for Vayl as well. As for Vayl, well, he’s definitely sexy, definitely cares about Jaz, and their relationship is special. However, Ms. Rardin sticks to the action in this one and leaves plenty of wiggle room to develop Jaz and Vayl’s relationship in future books. Vamps, hideous ancient creatures, and out of body experiences definitely make for a wild ride you won’t soon forget! I’m saddened to know that this series has a hard end with the sudden passing of the author last year, but I’ll certainly look forward to reading my way through it!
