Interview and Giveaway with Scott Nicholson!

Today on the blog I have Scott Nicholson, author of the #1 Kindle bestseller Liquid Fear, among many others! He’s also offering a copy of his children’s e-book, Too Many Witches, to one lucky winner! Please see the giveaway details at the end of this post, and welcome Scott to the blog!
Scott, you’ve written books in more than one genre. Do you have a favorite?
Well, I tend to like whatever I am writing at the moment, and it’s fun to reach different audiences. The thrillers have been the most popular, but there is a wild, loyal audience for the supernatural books. And I think the children’s e-book market is going to explode when Kindle gets its color tablet out and reaches libraries. So I guess I will keep doing everything! I am really happy to hear from people who like the books, and as long as it’s fun and people want them, I’ll keep doing them.

What’s your most interesting writing quirk?
That I like to panic. I set up ridiculous deadlines for myself and schedule a book launch after just a few chapters, and then I force myself to finish the book. Even though it’s fun, there’s also this bit of fear riding along. I like that kind of energy, as long as it stays healthy.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would they title it?
He Lied Good
What makes you toss a book aside in frustration?
Withholding information. If you’re 10 pages in and you can’t see anything and you don’t know the characters, why keep going? It probably doesn’t get much better.

What kinds of things do you like to see in a good book?
Intensity. A book that matters and is not just filling time. You see those series bestsellers where it’s obvious the writer is just punching the clock. I like a book that’s challenging and that a certain crowd will despise. I tend to write polarizing books. People one-star or five-star me, but they rarely are like “Whatever.” I don’t want to be a C student. I want to ace it or fail spectacularly.

What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?

In writing? Publishing my first original novel as an e-book. It was turning my back on 12 years of everything I had been taught about a writing career. It was part daring and part desperation, and a tiny bit of calculation. When I started, I just wanted to pay the light bill with my self-pub money, and in 14 months, it became my job.In life, the most daring thing is to say “Yes.” To love, to success, to committing to the things you know are right even if they go against the crowd. A higher purpose.

Can you tell us something about yourself that not a lot of people know?
Well, I am starting an heirloom seed business, evolving my organic gardening to learn about seeds and help bring seeds back to the people instead of having our food controlled by corporations. They do not care about our health. They want something shiny to sell in a store. That’s the end goal of commercial agriculture, not keeping you alive. Nature knows how to do it but we’ve forgotten, and if I can help us relearn that, and use any success I get to feed people, that’s a higher purpose for me. I also make micro-loans to gardeners around the world through Kiva.org to help other people use homegrown techniques for feeding their families and neighbors.

Is there any news you’d like to share of upcoming projects or events?

I am frantically working on a sequel to Liquid Fear. Chronic Fear will be out in late June. And yes, I am writing it in a state of fear! I am also working on a vampire book Night School with bestsellers J.R. Rain and H.T. Night. Thanks for hosting me and sharing your readers, Kristin!

  5. This is not an entry 🙂

But I had to comment just cause Scott is awesome, and to say OH YEAH! What that oh yeah is about is I was talking to my husband who told me not to buy seeds at the store for the garden. I knew this already, but I couldn't remember who I knew that grew heirloom seeds (which I didn't remember the name either) but I thought it was someone I 'knew' online. And now I 'remember'! Thanks for that! Off to look it up…

Hi thanks and good luck everyone, and thanks Kristin, for hosting!

Candace, an excellent seed company is Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds–they help feed people around the world with their profits. There's also an organization called Seed Savers. Hopefully by this fall I will have my first seed batch!
