The wonderful Kevin Hearne, author of the upcoming Iron Druid Chronicles: Hounded, Hexed, and Hammered, was kind enough to answer a few questions about the series and tell us about a few of his favorite things! Also up for grabs is 2 copies of Hounded that will go to 2 lucky winners (please see giveaway details at the end of this post).
Please welcome Kevin to the blog!
MBW: Kevin, you’ve got Hounded, Hexed, and Hammered coming out in May, early June, and late June! Whew!! You’re a writing machine! Can you tell us a bit about the series?
Sure. The Iron Druid Chronicles shows you what happens when Atticus O’Sullivan, a Druid who’s been running for two thousand years, decides not to run anymore. He’s been hiding out from an Irish god named Aenghus Óg, and once he stands up to that god, there are all kinds of consequences, both on earth and in some other places. Though Hounded focuses mainly on the Irish pantheon, as the series continues we get visits from the Norse, Greco-Roman, Slavic, and Native American pantheons, and I’m planning on more. I’m having tremendous fun with the character, by the way; what is important to a man who’s been walking the earth for over two millennia? Why does he go on living when everyone he’s ever known and loved has passed on?
Your degree is in English Education, and you currently teach high school. Did you always want to teach? What did your students think about the news that you were getting published?
I didn’t know what the heck I wanted to do at first. I was a graphic design major originally, but I found the business side of it distasteful, and a bit of soul searching got me out of it for good. I didn’t want to be on my deathbed someday, looking back on my life, and realizing that my greatest accomplishment was this wine label or that corporate logo. My love for literature and the desire to do something meaningful with my working life settled me on teaching. Some of my students think it’s cool that I’m getting published. Actually, they don’t think it’s cool—they think it’s “sick,” which is this really bizarre development in American slang that I don’t understand. Some of them, I suspect, think I’m joking, and others are unaware, because I don’t talk about it all that much.
What are some of your biggest literary influences?
I love Ken Kesey. If you haven’t ever gotten around to reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, please do. The movie was brilliant, but if that’s all you know of it then you’re missing out on the point of view, which is entirely inside of Chief’s head. It makes a big difference, and it’s an important theme: we must all struggle to maintain our identities in the face of societal pressure to conform. It’s sad that I’m not allowed to teach it.In terms of sci-fi/fantasy, I’m a fanboy of Neil Gaiman and Neal Stephenson. Patrick Rothfuss is probably the best storyteller walking right now. And his beard is “sick.” I want a sick Author Beard like that, but my wife won’t let me grow one.
I noticed in your bio that you’re a Mountain Dew fan. It’s safe to say I’m an addict. Have you discovered the pure joy of Mountain Dew Throwback (Made with REAL Sugar)?
Heh! No, I haven’t had the pleasure. I don’t drink much Mountain Dew anymore, because I tend to get my caffeine from coffee these days. If I did the Dew on top of that I’d be twitching too much to type. But Mountain Dew was certainly a staple of my high school years.
I loves me some Tarantino. The Matrix is a classic. Shakespeare in Love. And under the category of guilty pleasure, The Fifth Element. “Aziz, light!”
I’m so excited for the release of your trilogy! Is there any news or teasers you can give us about upcoming projects?
Currently I’m working on Tricked, the fourth book of The Iron Druid Chronicles, plus an untitled epic fantasy and a super secret project that I’ll hopefully get to announce sometime in the summer. Thanks so much for having me!
