Interview and Giveaway with Christina Henry!

Please welcome Christina Henry, author of Black Wings and the upcoming Black Night, to the blog!
Also up for grabs is a copy of Black Wings, which will go to one lucky winner! Please read giveaway rules and details at the end of this post!

Christina, welcome to the blog! It’s a pleasure to have you!

Thanks so much for having me here!

For those that haven’t yet read Black Wings, can you tell us a bit about it?
It’s a book about an Agent of Death named Madeline Black. She’s stressed, broke and has a hungry gargoyle to feed. On top of all this, her supervisor is a giant pain in the bottom. She’s pretty much just trying to get by with this crappy inherited Death gig when her whole world is turned upside down, first by a mysterious stranger who wants to rent the apartment in her building, then by a monster that shows up out of nowhere and starts eating people.

There’s quite a bit of angel and demon mythology at play in Black Wings. What kind of research did you do?
I didn’t really do too much research. I looked up the angelic hierarchy on Wikipedia and the definitions of the Grigori and the nephilim. I wanted the mythology of Black Wings to be my own so I tried to stay away from too much research – I didn’t want to be influenced by other sources.

When you started writing Maddy’s story, did you have in mind how many books you’d like to write?
I knew that I wanted to write at least a trilogy, and luckily Ace agreed with me 🙂 They’ve just offered me another three-book contract so the series will now be at least six books.

What were some of your favorite reads growing up?

I loved J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”. I still re-read them every year. Same goes for “Pride and Prejudice”. As a young girl I remember reading and loving all of the “Black Stallion” books. I also really enjoyed any fantasy by Robin McKinley and Elizabeth Boyer.

What are some of your favorite contemporary reads, and are there any that inspire or influence you more than others?
Jim Butcher is probably my favorite author working right now. I really admire the way he takes chances with his protagonist, Harry Dresden. Neil Gaiman, Charlaine Harris, Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Richard Russo are also must-reads for me.

When did you first realize you’d like to try your hand at writing a novel?
When I was 12 years old I read J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” for the first time and decided then and there to be a writer. I’ve never really wanted to do anything else.

Is there anything in particular that helps you write, and is it hard balancing writing with family life?

I don’t have a special routine but I do try to hit a certain page count each day that I write. At the beginning of the book I write 5-8 pages per day. As the book progresses I try to write 8-10 pages per day.I usually try to get the bulk of my writing done while my son is at school. He’s at preschool only 2 ½ hours a day right now so some days it’s a challenge to hit that page count. If I can’t hit my page count for the day I finish up my writing day after my son goes to bed, but it’s definitely harder for me to write in the evening. I’m a morning person!I don’t think it’s necessarily any harder to balance writing with family life than it is to balance a “regular” day job with family life. Once you have kids I think everything becomes a juggling act. I think that the key is just to really use your scheduled time to write and not get distracted by the dirty laundry.

I read that you’re a runner. So am I! Do you get some of your ideas when running?
I find running to be very meditative – I get into a zone where I just kind of let thoughts flow freely and don’t concentrate on any one thing. A lot of times dialogue for an upcoming scene in a book will occur to me while I’m out running.

Any favorite races?
The half-marathon distance is my favorite. I’ve done ten half-marathons. It’s just enough distance to be a challenge but not so long that the training eats up a lot of time. I’ve also done two marathons, and the training takes a lot more out of you.

Is there something about yourself you can tell us that not a lot of people know about?
I love to watch “Man vs. Food” on the Travel Channel. I just cannot look away from the spectacle of this guy eating huge amounts of food.

Your second Maddy adventure, Black Night, is due in July. Can you give us a teaser?
J.B. is definitely going to play a bigger role in the next book. You also get to meet his mother – he has a cryptic comment about his mom in Black Wings that I never expanded on. His mother is a major player in the world of Black Wings and both J.B. and his mom will be around for the foreseeable future. I can’t tell you too much more than that without giving away some of the twists in the sequel.

Is there any other news about upcoming projects that you’d like to share?
I’ve got an idea for another story right now but I’m not sure when I’ll have a chance to work on it, so I’m keeping it in my pocket for now 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by the job, Christina. It was a pleasure!
Thank you!
