Interview and Giveaway with Seanan McGuire!

Today on the blog, I have the awesome Seanan McGuire, author of the Toby Daye series, and the Newsflesh series (writing as Mira Grant). Seanan is one of my fave authors, and has one of the most comprehensive and fun bios that I’ve seen on an author site, so I decided that some things just needed to be clarified. Seanan was kind enough to humor me and she was also kind enough to offer up copies of An Artificial Night AND Late Eclipses to one lucky winner!

Please welcome Seanan to the blog!
My Bookish Ways: Seanan, thanks for stopping by the blog! I’m thrilled to have you here!

Seanan McGuire: Thanks so much for having me! I actually really love doing interviews, it’s a great way to say howdy.

You are a writing machine. I’m not complaining, but how do you find time for anything else?
I don’t sleep.
So…snakes, and swamps… I’m intrigued? Where did your love of snakes and swamps come from?
I grew up in one of the semi-rural zones of the San Francisco Bay Area (although it’s gotten a lot more developed in recent years), and used to spend a lot of time in the creek near my house, playing with frogs, fishing for bluegills, and generally living my wacky little Tom Sawyer fantasy life. You can’t be a kid in Northern California without learning to respect and recognize snakes, and it just sort of turned into a lifelong love.
Primeval
I read in your bio that you like TV…a lot. Any particular faves?
Fringe

I am going to be a good girl and restrict myself to things which are currently on the air or coming back soon, so as to not turn this into the ‘all TV, all the time’ interview. I love Fringe, Doctor Who, Primeval, and Tower Prep for my crazy science fiction fix; Glee and iCarly for my comedy funtimes; Haven, Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Being Human, for being on Syfy; and Phineas and Ferb and So You Think You Can Dance, just because. This is maybe half the shows I watch. Just so you know.

Fave movies?
Favorite horror movie, Slither, by James Gunn. Favorite musical, a tie between Hairspray and Little Shop of Horrors. Favorite traditionally animated film, Lilo and Stitch; favorite CGI film, How To Train Your Dragon. Favorite comedy, Zombieland.
You’re not only a writing machine, but you compose music too! How long have you been composing, and what kind of music influences you the most?
Since I was a kid. We have songs I wrote when I was like, six. I’m influenced by everything, and you can sort of hear where I was mentally by listening to my songs. My latest album, Wicked Girls, is very American folk and modern country.
How many clone bodies would be appropriate for accomplishing all you’d like to do, and would you name them?
At least fifteen, and no way. I want them to eventually rise up and try to conquer me in bloody battle to determine which of us is going to be the sole survivor and owner of the real girl name sticker.
There’s a small teaser section on your site about the InCryptids. I, for one, am dying to know more. Any news or info you can share with us?
So InCryptid is the story of a family—the Price family. About five generations ago, they realized that they were on the wrong side in the human/cryptid war; cryptids serve a valuable ecological purpose. So they quit killing monsters and went into conservation instead. They work with the cryptid population of the world to try and integrate and conceal them, and keep them from getting slaughtered. These are, for the most part, normal people, whose only superpowers are a lifelong love affair with heavy weapons, and a pig-headed refusal not to run toward the sound of screaming.
The first book, Discount Armageddon, is about Verity Price, who fights the forces of evil through the power of ballroom dance. She’s in Manhattan doing her journeyman work with the urban cryptid population, trying to launch her dance career, and working nights as a cocktail waitress at a strip club. And then everything goes horribly wrong.Oh, and there are talking pantheistic demon mice.
Finally, Evil Dead or The Thing?

Evil Dead vs. the original Thing, Evil Dead. Evil Dead vs. the remake? The Thing. The Thing vs. Evil Dead: the Musical? Evil Dead: the Musical. Deadites always love to get their freak on, and when we get together, we do the Necronomicon. That’s just how we roll.

That’s how I roll too:)

*Keep an eye out, ’cause Seanan will be back on the blog for the June Event, for more grilling by yours truly!
